PASHM
From the Himalayas’ Artistry to the Designer’s Vision
As a storyteller and a custodian of our fading textiles and crafts, Ame traverses across the country to rediscover and re-imagine our heritage. Pashm comes from that resolute mission—a revival of Leh’s most treasured legacy, Pashmina. Here, pashmina becomes more than a beautiful accessory for the vanity. It is a token of love and reverence for its origin, past, and journey—the goat herders, the harvesting, the hand-spinning, the stitching, and the final rendering.
Ladakh
The Pride of Ladakh
The story of Pashm begins in the secluded regions of Ladakh and Khimar, where the local Changpa herding tribes co-exist in synergy with nature. In the rugged high altitudes, where survival is an art, the art of Pashmina lives and breathes. The most authentic, long-staple cashmere wool is extracted from the undercoat of Changra goats over generations, where animals are cared for and wool is gathered only when nature allows.
Each strain of wool is manually harvested with great care, held within the ability of the tribe. Once collected, the wool proceeds to Leh, where a traditional process of de-hairing is undertaken. A craft that works with natural ingredients and tools, preserving the integrity of the wool. The same wool is then packed and transferred to Kashmir, where it is hand-spun into cashmere fiber—a practice that dates back centuries and celebrates the luxury, transforming the material into something beautiful.
Srinagar
From Fiber to The Finished Story
In Srinagar, the cleaned wool is carefully hand-spun into delicate yarn on the Kashmiri yinder (traditional wooden hand-spinning tool) by women artisans. This rare and precious hand-spun Pashmina is further woven on traditional looms in individual homes, each product becoming a testament to the time, precision, and unwavering faith and spirit of this fabric.
Bengaluru
The Concluding Tuck
The journey continues to its last destination, The Ame Design Studio in Bangalore, before it reaches you. The pure pashmina takes a silhouette that marries comfort with refined style—one that goes on to become an heirloom, a mark of luxury in its purest form, and a statement. Here in our ateliers, the Pashmina is thoughtfully rendered into masterful creations, embodying the design principles and ethos of Ame.
